P4 - Editorial Illustrations

Your last and final illustration class assignment is to create three illustrations for the Editorial page of the New York Times. Editorial page illustrations are simple and convey an opinion about an issue and/or a point-of-view about an idea. In short, they are conceptual as opposed to narrative or descriptive. They are also commissioned about a timely issue (such as the Asylum Seekers Issue in San Diego) with very tight deadlines (one day to 4 hours). As such, they are usually bold, but simple in color and form, but strong in concept and idea.

Editorial illustrations are usually commissioned by publication art directors. You can read more about What Art Directors Want: Tips for Editorial Illustrators in Create, Adobe’s online magazine.

The final three illustrations are due printed and posted on the crit wall, as well as your class blog, the last day of class, December 6th.
