Our next illustration will be a portrait. The commission is by a magazine. The illustration will either be used for the cover and/or accompany an article within the magazine. You are to choose the person you will create the portrait of, as well as the magazine you will be illustrating for.
The objective of the class project is to create a likeness of a known person, but also illustrate them within a context, physical and/or psychological, to convey a particular point of view and/or concept about the person to the magazine reader. The point-of-view and/or concept will be the illustration’s message.
The final illustration (cover and/or full-page article), along with a spot illustration will be due Tuesday, October 23rd.
To launch the project, you will need to write a project brief, including a project schedule. Along with the brief, you will compile a creative word list, an image research board with at least 12 images of the person you will be creating the portrait of, and at least three thumbnail concepts. All will be due on your blog the beginning of class Thursday, September 25th.
There is synergetic creative potential with the all of information that you gathered in launching the project. The more targeted your project brief in defining the sender and audience, and most particularly the message outlined in your brief, along with a carefully perused image and mood board, the more effectively you will be able to creatively conjure concepts and reveal visual expression for your final illustration.
The next part of this class assignment is to become familiar with the formal characteristics of your chosen subject. In this case, the subject of your portrait. Choose at least six mages of your person from your 12 selected images and carefully create six tracings, digital or on tracing paper, to discover physical and visual qualities of their face and their form and implied expressions unique to this individual. The sketches and explorations should be at least 5x7 inches in size. They my be sketched black and white, as well as in color. One sketch should include a full body investigation, particularly if your final illustration will need fully body expression. Take one particular sketch and label with words six distinctive expressive physical features of the person. Take another sketch and exaggerate at least two or three of those features to amplify their expressive qualities, making the sketch more communicative of the individual. If necessary, go back and gather more images of your person to more effectively discover the formal qualities of your chosen individual sketching and tracing. At the same time your are sketching your six or more investigations, conjure at least three more thumbnail concepts for your final illustration. All will be due on your blog the beginning of class Tuesday, October 2nd.
ATTENTION: Your magazine has called and due to scheduling conflicts at the press, they need your illustration a week early. After intense negotiation you were able to rescue a few days, so the due date for the final illustration has moved to Thursday, October 18th!
